It may sound strange, but it’s true that many people confuse when it comes to the design terms “Modern” & “Contemporary”. Despite the fact that people use these words conversely, they completely differ from each other in the styles of decoration. Let’s take a look at some basics regarding the Modern and Contemporary design styles and compare between both of them.

 History of Modern & Contemporary Design

The Modern Style is mostly the Modernism movement’s design and décor, which has begun at the end of 1800s. Thanks to the German Bauhaus design schools, in addition to the Scand avian design focus on purity and functionality. To be honest, the Modern Style is way too old. In a matter of fact, the Modern Style finally changed to be Midcentury Modern, which appears to be Modern Design and Postmodernism, which has absolutely nothing to do with Modern Design.

On the other hand, the Contemporary Style shined in the 1970s. Believe it or not, it was a mixture of many styles before becoming appreciable and noticeable in its unique way. Modernism and Postmodernism were the inspiration sources of the Contemporary design, which made the best use of both. For example, Art Deco, Deconstructivism, Futurism and more.

 Modern vs. Contemporary

Honestly, there are countless differences between them. Space in the modern design is likely to follow a hard-boiled style. On the contrary, Contemporary design is known for having multiple diversities regarding its interiors. Modern designs appear in their true forms, which are viewed as stark or cold. However, some of the Contemporary design interiors are popular with bold starkness.
In reference to colors; Modern decorating colors tend to be natural or neutral. While Contemporary ones have diversities regarding the color scale. Modern designs prefer strong lines, but Contemporary ones favor curves and patterns.

 So, Are there any Similarities?

Of course there are! Here are some. Both styles like simplicity, tidiness spaces with sleek, clean patterns, in addition to artistic touch as well. Also, they favor fancily decorated designs or heavy elements. However, Contemporary spaces recently tend to shape this rule more again and again. Both styles’ sofas, chairs and ottomans are popular with having bare legs. Plus, they favor reflective surface like bare metals and glass.
